In‐Situ Silt Generation in the Taklimakan Desert Evidenced by Uranium Isotopes

چکیده
Understanding the mechanism of dust generation is critical for evaluating global cycles nutrient elements and interpreting paleorecords derived from aeolian deposits. Here, we use a novel geochemical tracer, 234U/238U activity ratio that reveals particle comminution age, Sr-Nd isotopes to investigate how silt-sized particles are produced in Taklimakan Desert, major source region having effects on ecosystems. Based results 20- 25-μm size fractions, find approximately 40% Desert silts 30% flux area by in-situ desert processes (e.g., abrasion). The materials mainly sourced eastern Kunlun Shan unlikely be Chinese Loess Plateau. Our findings demonstrate importance producing particles, providing new insights into cycle.

The age of the Taklimakan Desert.
The Taklimakan Desert is located in the foreland basin of the Tibetan Plateau. We report here the results of stratigraphic investigations of a 1626-meter-thick sequence with interbedded wind-blown silt from the southern marginal Taklimakan Desert. Because the studied section is located downwind of the desert, the eolian silt accumulation is closely linked to desert formation. Our new evidence i...
متن کاملDetermination of uranium isotopes (234U, 238U) and natural uranium (U-nat) in water samples by alpha spectrometry
Background: Due to the potential public health effects of releases of uranium to the environment, isotopic determination and measurement of this radionuclide in environmental samples is very important. Achieving this goal, monitoring programs for this radionuclide seems necessary to be applied in many countries. Materials and Methods: The uranium was separated from the water samples using anion...
متن کاملUranium isotopes fingerprint biotic reduction.
Knowledge of paleo-redox conditions in the Earth's history provides a window into events that shaped the evolution of life on our planet. The role of microbial activity in paleo-redox processes remains unexplored due to the inability to discriminate biotic from abiotic redox transformations in the rock record. The ability to deconvolute these two processes would provide a means to identify envi...

متن کاملModerate irrigation intervals facilitate establishment of two desert shrubs in the Taklimakan Desert Highway Shelterbelt in China
BACKGROUND Water influences various physiological and ecological processes of plants in different ecosystems, especially in desert ecosystems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the response of physiological and morphological acclimation of two shrubs Haloxylon ammodendron and Calligonum mongolicunl to variations in irrigation intervals. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS The irrigation ...
